Problems with the GPS feature

Postby reinhardholzner » Wed Nov 11, 2009 4:06 am

Question:

I am testing the application and after some tries the GPS feature seems to not work. I am using the update command, and in the information received I can see all data but the GPS that shows on the SMS is just [N/A].

Answer:

This can have two reasons:
a) Timeout of the GPS operation: if GPS data can not be received after some time, the operation will abort and [N/A] will be shown.
b) Error in the GPS module: to diagnose the problem, please install a file browser on your phone. Navigate to C:\Logs and try to find a directory called SAL. If no such directory exists, no problems were found. If a directory exists, send us the log files contained in it. The log files will contain more information for us to diagnose the problem.

I am aware of the 2 awnsers you gave. Now i have the same problem with that. I don't see any log in my phone so i don't think it's a problem with my GPS or phone. I think it's the time out problem. If it is the time out problem are you guys working on an update or upgrade for that problem? or there is something we can do about it? Because all the information that the theft system is giving us is not bad at all. but it would be better if we can get the GPS position to. Knowing the phones of now days, the GPS system works very accurate.

Nokia 5800 firmware 31.0.008 hard reset to perform clean install.

Program works fine when no valid gps signal found and sends location message with just cellid as expected.

Test Procedure (After downloading and installing trial):

1. Obtaín valid gps signal using nokia's location app and use satellite status option to see the signal strengths.

2. Send location request message to phone.

3. No location message received.

4. Test using simulate theft event with valid gps signal.

5. Application goes though sequence of obtaining gps signal and sending location message is halted with 'taking a long time to send message'

6. Logs show 'Loading property bag failed (-12)'

a) please try to only send a test SMS using the advanced options. Does the same response occur?
b) when sending your remote command, did you use the correct message format (including valid access code)?

In response:

a) Test SMS in advanced options, no problem.

b) Remote command correct format with access code yes because as stated location message is only received if a gps signal is not present. Can receive numerous location messages while no gps signal.

Once you attempt a location reqúest with a valid gps signal, no location message is sent & all subsequent requests fail even without a gps signal. Can still get into application dialling access code, i.e. software still running.
Like I've said your software does perform the gps signal acquisition but there is a failure after that because the message sending fails as verified with the 'Simulate theft event' in advanced options.
Just a thought as I've dabbled in symbian c++, do you think it has anything to do with the fact that I live in a negative longitude, i.e west of Geenwich, London. Have you performed tests with negative co-ordinates because your in Germany with positive co-ordinates. Perhaps when your loading gps co-ordinates into location message this is failing because of the negative co-ordinate?
Is your error code in log (-12) related to the symbian error code -12, i.e. KErrPathNotFound?

As we have customers all over the planet that use the product successfully we dont think that it is related to the coordinates. Also, the log file error is not related to that behaviour. As we can not reproduce the error we can not fix the problem at this point in time. And i think you can not send the mobile in for further debug inspections!?

hello - we have lags at the moment as Symbian changed their signing procedure and in this process the test house we worked with was closed. Please be patient while we negotiate new contracts.

Any update on this. I'm having the same error on Nokia 5800. I think this started to happen after updating the firmware. In general if I have GPS positioning turned on (either in "internal" or "assisted" mode) - when I send the update SMS, the program start the GPS and I can see the satellite icon on the phone. After a while the icon disappears but I never got an SMS back. In the log I see the same error: 'Loading property bag failed (-12)'

If I turn GPS positioning off, I do not see the satellite icon and I get back an sms, but this time it contains only the GSM CELL info.
